  1. Thank you for writing this article. It captures much of what I have thought about since becoming an elementary vice principal. In this board, all elementary vice principals are part time except I believe for one position. I started out for five months as a full time vp and then was moved to another school to be part time and I have been either 0.2 or 0.3 for the last 5 1/2 years. Had I really thought about what part time "vp ship" would have entailed, I would have reconsidered this route. In this very part time role, one wears too many hats. The teaching portion changes from year to year as the vp fills in the holes. There is no prep time attached to the teaching role which adds to the pressure and time restraints. As others go to professional development, PLCs, and CIL-Ms, the vp stays at the school. One then feels like they are losing a grip on current initiatives making one feel less equipped to go the "next step". I believe that the boards should put time and resources into their vps. Almost all of us had planned to become principals. I do believe that my board is making an effort to do so as this part year regular self selected professional development was available for vps. A step in the right direction.
